Motivation Strategies for College Students

MoodsMotivationTips for Colleges Students

Motivation is the driving force behind our actions. Motivation can be impacted by many factors, including age, marital and financial status, educational success, and stress. Motivation is a key part that students should have to be successful in their education. However, when motivation is low due to outside elements like depression and stress, it can be difficult for students to maintain the drive they need. The relationship between motivation, stress, and academic success is tough to balance. This balance is similar to managing your social, academic, and family life. Mental health conditions like depression and anxiety can negatively impact how motivated a person is. When handling these conditions, it is important to understand how your motivation is impacted so that you can maintain success in all areas of your life.

Signs When Your Motivation is Low

If you are going through your daily life, you may not be able to tell when your motivation is low. When we get wrapped up in the hectic changes that occur in our lives, we don’t always have the time to slow down and think about our mental stability.

When you have low motivation, you might be… Feeling depressed about having symptoms of depression. Feeling out of control of your mind and thoughts. Feeling disengaged (numb, emotionally gone, or being cut off from your emotions). Unkind or rude to your loved ones without intending to do so.

Try to take some time for yourself if you are feeling any of the symptoms above. A short breathing exercise or a mindful meditation may help you feel more “in the moment” with your thoughts and feelings. After taking a moment to rest, you may feel like you have more energy to tackle the tasks you wanted to do today. That is your motivation returning, or refilling, in hopes that you can continue being successful in all areas of your life.
